Tim Bowman Jr.’s New Twist on a Yuletide Standard

Tim Bowman Jr. channels the warm and relaxed vocal style of ‘50s crooners but also vamps with gospel flourishes on his new version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” the seasonal classic sung originally by Judy Garland in Vincent Minnelli’s Meet Me In St. Louis.

Bowman comes from a musical family—his father is guitarist Tim Bowman and aunt is Vickie Winans—so it’s no surprise that a big band provides ample support as he delivers the ballad with both jazz and gospel inflections.

“A lot of people my age don’t like the older style of singing,” Bowman told our gospel editor Bob Marovich in an interview he posted at his Black Gospel Blog last year, “but I embrace it. I like to blend the newer, R&B hip hop style with the older style.”
